PROJECT: Home Depot
LOCATION: Providence, RI
YEAR: 2001
SQUARE FOOTAGE: 110,000
The site of the proposed Home Depot location was historically a dumping ground for railway coal ash at the turn of the century. Marathon’s biggest challenge in developing on this site included driving 1175 110-foot deep concrete piles into the ground to create a structural foundation as the coal ash itself would not support the building.
To keep consistent with the town’s existing brick mill buildings, Marathon created precast concrete panels with brick facing to mimic the look, complete with infilled brick “windows”. Although the original site conditions were unique and the winter was exceptionally cold, Marathon delivered the project on-time and on-budget for the client.
